Actually, I think its: Ich bin Amerikaner. I don't think you have to say the "a" like in English.

Well, you don't really have to say the "a/an" in English either. You can either say "I am American," or "I am an American."

oh yeah, I meant that its wrong to say the ein in german, but you can do either way in english.

either way is fine in german. you can say: Ich bin ein Amerikaner or Ich bin Amerikaner
