Also known as TOS (or Terms & Conditions - T&C), these are the statements within free sites and advertising offers that outline what product or service they are providing, and any limitations or rights they have as an entity. Before registering with a site or completing an advertising offer, users must agree to these terms and are therefore legally bound to them. As such, it is important to know what you are agreeing to before blindly accepting these terms.

Free sites

Free sites have TOS/T&C’s to explain their business practices and any rights they choose to hold as a company. These are important to read because a free site may state something to the effect of “This free site may disqualify any and every user for whatever reason they deem appropriate” and as a result be legally allowed to never send out a free gift, as promised on their website. Furthermore, these terms explain to users what to expect from the company and how any problems may be dealt with.

Advertising offers

Advertising offers, also called sponsored offers, are provided by their respective companies, such as Netflix. These companies outline the terms of the offer to users, explaining important information such as:

 1. How the offer and/or trial will work
 2. How much the offer and/or trial will cost
 3. How to contact Customer Service with any problems
 4. Terms of the trial (if there is a trial period)
 5. The timeline of the offer and/or trial

This is important for users to know because an offer may state that it is free for the first 7 days, and then automatically charge you $100 every 7 days after that. If you as a user do not read this in the Terms before agreeing to them, you are legally bound to pay that amount unless you follow the company’s guidelines for their trial period.
